Description
The Lofoten Kelp Forest Restoration project is a pioneering blue carbon initiative located in the pristine waters of the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway. By restoring degraded kelp forests across 2,500 hectares of coastal waters, the project sequesters significant amounts of CO₂ while simultaneously restoring critical marine habitats. The project employs local fishing communities in kelp planting and monitoring activities, creating sustainable livelihoods while combating climate change. Working in partnership with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, the initiative uses advanced underwater drone technology to map and monitor kelp growth, ensuring accurate carbon sequestration measurement.
