Description
The Norrbotten Boreal Biodiversity Reserve protects 15,000 hectares of pristine old-growth boreal forest in northern Sweden. This ancient ecosystem harbors exceptional biodiversity, including endangered species such as the Siberian jay, three-toed woodpecker, and the Eurasian lynx. By preventing commercial logging and implementing active conservation measures, the project preserves vast carbon stocks held in centuries-old trees and peatland soils. The project issues Biodiversity Credits (BDC) measured through comprehensive ecological surveys, tracking species counts, habitat quality indices, and ecosystem health indicators. Indigenous Sámi communities are active partners in land stewardship and traditional ecological knowledge integration.
