Old boreal forests provide habitat for thousands of species and continue to store carbon as they grow. But when a forest is ready for harvest, its value is often measured mainly through its timber.
Fossagrim creates a financial value for keeping harvest-ready forests standing, recognising the carbon sequestration, biodiversity and wider ecosystem benefits that would otherwise be lost through clear-cutting.
Fossagrim uses established forest-growth models to measure the carbon and biodiversity benefits of preserving forests rather than harvesting them. The approach also recognises wider benefits including water and soil regulation, pollination and recreation.
The first Norwegian project forests were signed in 2023, with their preservation funded by businesses that receive the right to the nature and climate benefits generated by the projects.
Why preservation matters The benefits begin immediately when a forest that would otherwise be harvested is kept standing. Mature forests continue to provide habitat and remove CO₂ from the atmosphere, while allowing the forest to develop towards a more natural state.
Preserving these forests also avoids the carbon loss associated with clear-cutting and gives forest owners a way to create long-term value beyond timber.
