Water shortages affect agriculture, businesses and tourism. Making fresh water from seawater is typically produced in large coastal plants powered by fossil fuels. Ocean Oasis moves the process out to sea: floating units powered by ocean waves turn seawater into fresh water, using no land, no grid and no fuel.
The Canary Islands are under severe water stress. The islands are among the largest users of desalinated water in Europe, with desalination (removing salt from seawater) accounting for over 10% of the islands’ electricity use. The Gran Canaria project demonstrates the potential of locally available wave power to enable off-grid desalination and reduce energy use and carbon emissions from the islands’ water production.
