Kristiansand, NorwayFossagrim-Stitjønna
Stitjønna is an old, mixed-species forest in Søgne, just west of Kristiansand. Most trees are 100–150 years old, with some juniper reaching an estimated 250–300 years. The forest provides valuable habitat, but also contains high-quality timber and would be planned for harvesting without the preservation project.
Fossagrim and the landowner have secured 52.9 ha from harvesting for at least 30 years, allowing the forest to continue growing and storing carbon while protecting its nature value.
Stitjønna combines pine-covered hills with lower areas of spruce and at least 13 hardwood species. Dead and fallen trees remain in the forest, creating habitat for insects and other small animals as well as deer and moose.
Located close to densely populated areas, the forest is also widely used for running, walking and camping. Several areas have registered biodiversity value, and the project is considered to have substantial nature value.
