Terra Madre
Agroforestry integrates trees and permanent crops into farming systems, helping protect soils, regenerate ecosystems and support biodiversity. But adoption can be difficult when farmers face high upfront costs, long payback periods and no financial return for these wider benefits.
Terra Madre uses carbon financing to help overcome this barrier. Its Terra+ methodology measures carbon stored in both soil and growing tree biomass, turning these measured outcomes into carbon credits that provide financial incentives for farmers in Spain and Portugal to make the shift.
Terra Madre works with farmers to implement regenerative agroforestry systems and continuously measure their impact. The approach links carbon finance to the real changes taking place on farms, helping reduce the financial risk of transitioning to new farming systems.
For the 2023 monitoring period, 7,073 tCO₂e of Emission Removals and Reductions were independently verified, with 5,658 tCO₂e issuable after a 1,415 tCO₂e buffer.
Independent verification The 2023 results were independently verified by TÜV Rheinland Energy & Environment GmbH (TREE) against ISO 14064-2:2019 and ISO 14064-3:2019. The methodology is also aligned with the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF).
